Organolepticians #98
It’s Wednesday, day 9 of Shelter-In-Place here in Berkeley, day 11 since the last time I was in a building other than the house where I live. (Day 361 since I was struck by a pickup truck in a crosswalk in North Berkeley, out on a walk a short while before sunset. What a year.)

The ground on which we stand refuses to keep us in a place that can be located on any map any of us has ever seen. The days come and go, the news gets worse. Yet what we can observe in person, in front of us, here in these circumscribed bodies, from the eyes they contain, seems, suddenly so little. So much of the information we take in must be held in mind, sifted over; our imaginations become crowded with data, with emotions, with uncertainty. Our capacities stretch and strain.
One of the odd things about Edmunds St. John that I’ve clung to in recent years, is that if someone feels the impulse to order some wine from us, it has required doing so by email; it requires, at least some person to person communication. I want to feel a connection to the people who are drinking our wine. There’s a bit of inconvenience there, I suppose. I hope it doesn’t make anyone too uncomfortable. It would feel weird to me to do it any other way.
Suddenly nearly all the channels through which we’ve sold our wines over the past 35 years have been re-routed across both space and time, and I’m feeling really distanced! (There’s that word!), and missing everyone!
I’ve got a lineup of some of the very best wines we’ve ever put into bottles available to buy, (including two brand new from the 2019 vintage) and I’d love to make them available to you! The logistics of getting them from the warehouse where they’re stored to the shipper who gets them into your hands has become more complicated by the current COVID-19 situation, so fulfillment of the orders will likely not be immediate; my hope is (as I’m sure is yours) that the wait will be short, and worth it!
